  • HGM core classes—Math, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts—typically have about 30 students or fewer. Most elective classes are similar in size, helping create a supportive learning environment where students can engage and participate.

  • Like all LAUSD academic classes, HGM students have regular homework. Assignments may include studying, practicing skills, preparing for flipped-classroom activities, or working on short- and long-term projects. Homework is thoughtfully planned to support learning and reinforce classroom instruction. HGM teachers partner with students to build strong organizational skills and learn to balance schoolwork, homework, and extracurricular activities.

  • Portola HGM offers a unique learning experience that goes beyond a single theme. Instead, the program is intentionally designed to help every young scholar explore, grow, and shine. Through thoughtfully designed academic classes and engaging electives, students learn alongside motivated peers and are supported by experienced, dedicated teachers who challenge and inspire them.
