Model UN at Portola HGM…..

Model United Nations is a simulation of United Nations committees with students taking on the roles of delegates, working together to solve the worlds most difficult problems. Delegates develop their critical thinking, analysis, speaking and listening, writing, and diplomacy skills as they step into the shoes of nations and learn to speak for those who may not speak for themselves.

In sixth-grade, HGM learners have opportunities to use MUN basics in reading, writing, speaking, and debate through their Social Studies and Science classes. Sixth-graders who are interested in Model UN and global issues, may apply to join the seventh and eighth grade team, Bridges MUN.

The Impact of MUN…

My time at Model United Nations (MUN) has been very enjoyable and has been a great learning experience. MUN helps increase your knowledge about the world around you, and helps you become great at conveying your ideas and thoughts. It also increases your speaking skills, and makes you a great communicator.

I have been a part of Model United Nations for three years now, and I can safely state that it has shaped my time at school. MUN has greatly helped my communication and debating skills while bolstering my worldliness. Through conferences and debates at our weekly meetings, I have learned how to effectively prove points and persuade large swaths of people. Through Dr. Kang's guidance and my personal experiences, I have been able to become the seasoned delegate I am today. Though Model United Nations has been a rigorous journey for me and many others, I have learned so many valuable life lessons.

The Portola HGM Program is a great and safe space for anyone to explore different areas of the sciences and arts! From robotics to Model United Nations, students can experience a variety of activities. All of the wonderful teachers in the HGM are friendly and interactive making sure that all students can get the most out of the program. Not only this, but the HGM program acts as a community with everyone helping each other out. Everyone in our community can agree that we have all made some of our best memories through this program!
