Ms. Shin, 7th Grade Math
Hi, I’m Ms. Shin! I teach 7th grade math in the Highly Gifted Magnet program at Portola Middle School. I’ve been a math educator for 18 years, and I truly enjoy helping students grow as thinkers, problem solvers, and innovators.
I earned my B.S. in Biology from the University of British Columbia and completed my teaching credential through LAUSD’s District Intern program. Throughout my career, I have taught Middle School Mathematics, Algebra I, Algebra II, Financial Algebra, and Introduction to Engineering for the MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) program. I’ve also coached MESA teams and H2GP hydrogen fuel cell race car teams, where students had the opportunity to dive into engineering and real world STEM challenges.
Outside the classroom, I’m a mom of three and love spending time with my family. We enjoy going to LA Kings games, visiting national parks, exploring beaches, and traveling whenever we can. I also love trying new foods and discovering unique restaurants. Tasting different dishes is one of my favorite ways to learn about the world.
I am committed to creating a supportive, challenging, and engaging learning environment where students feel inspired, confident, and excited about mathematics, and develop the skills and habits needed to become strong lifelong learners.
